Nigeria Akwa Ibom 3000MW Combined Cycle Captive Power Plant

Superior Location to Build a Top-Tier Captive Power Hub in Africa

Located in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State in southeastern Nigeria, the project settles in Sterling Petrochemical & Fertilizer Free Trade Zone (SPFL FTZ). It enjoys convenient transportation and abundant natural gas resources. With a total installed capacity of 3,000MW, it is currently the largest under-construction gas-fired captive power plant in Africa. The project consists of 6 power generation units, equipped with 12 gas turbines, 6 steam turbines, 12 waste heat boilers and complete auxiliary facilities. Adopting mainstream Siemens gas turbines, the equipment features mature technology and strong adaptability to local operating conditions.
The core power transformation equipment of the project is customized and supplied by Zhongmeng Electric. To adapt to the high-load, continuous and humid overseas working conditions of the large combined cycle power plant, two main types of energy-saving transformers are applied in batches: SCB14 second-class energy efficiency dry-type transformer and SCBH17 amorphous alloy energy-saving transformer. Featuring low loss, low noise, fire resistance, moisture resistance and maintenance-free performance, the products are compatible with the 35kV/10kV power distribution system, effectively reducing power transmission consumption and meeting the project’s energy-saving and environmental protection requirements.
Undertaken by PowerChina Hubei Engineering Co., Ltd., the project adopts EPC mode covering pile foundation construction, civil engineering, equipment installation, system commissioning and supporting pipe network construction. Since the commencement, the construction team has strictly followed international standards in quality control, safety production and environmental management. The smooth progress of core procedures has gained high recognition from the owner and local government.

Outstanding Technological Advantages for Green & Low-Carbon Development

Different from traditional thermal power plants, this gas-fired plant adopts a combined cycle power generation process. The collaborative operation of gas turbines, waste heat boilers and steam turbines fully recycles waste heat to improve comprehensive energy utilization efficiency. Powered by clean natural gas, the plant reduces carbon emission intensity by 60% compared with coal-fired power plants, minimizing emissions of sulfides and dust.
With flexible startup, low energy consumption and high stability, the power plant meets diverse power demands for industrial production and civilian use. The captive power mode solves Nigeria’s problems of unstable grid power and power shortage, providing reliable and low-cost power for petrochemical, chemical and manufacturing industries in the free trade zone. Equipped with high-efficiency energy-saving transformers from Zhongmeng Electric, the plant further reduces auxiliary power consumption.

Strengthening China-Africa Cooperation to Stimulate Regional Economic Momentum

As a major energy consumer in Africa, Nigeria has long suffered from power shortages, outdated infrastructure and single energy structure. The 3,000MW large-scale captive power plant will become a core power hub in southern Nigeria after operation. It not only meets the power demand of industrial enterprises in the free trade zone, but also supplies surplus power to the public grid to alleviate national power tension.
The project drives the development of local industries such as labor service, building materials and transportation, creating a large number of jobs. The Chinese construction team transfers advanced engineering technologies and management experience to cultivate local professional talents and improve Nigeria’s power industry system. Upon completion, the plant will accelerate the development of industrial clusters and consolidate Nigeria’s position as a key energy hub in West Africa.

Benchmark Project Writing a New Chapter in Overseas Energy Cooperation

As a key Belt and Road infrastructure project, Akwa Ibom Power Plant integrates China’s high-end power technology with local African resources. Adhering to high-standard construction and refined management, the plant applies energy-saving transformation equipment from Zhongmeng Electric to build a benchmark green gas power project, providing replicable experience for large-scale captive power plant construction in Africa.
In the future, the construction team will optimize the construction plan, strictly control quality and safety, and ensure scheduled commissioning. Based on this project, Chinese power equipment enterprises will further explore the African energy market and continuously supply high-quality energy-saving power equipment.
